The Congruence X

Well, I don’t know about that…all I know is that you abandoned me. You promised to be back soon and you were away for almost 2 hours” I said just to digress

No vex my dear. Chief sent me a text message to come see him in his guest room…he needed some TLC, if you know what I mean” Deola responded

I saw Captain again, on the dance floor, after the inductee was sworn in…almost everyone at the party was dancing but I wasn’t.

I wasn’t trying to be a kill-joy; I was just feeling super sleepy. I wasn’t normally the stay-up-late type, the only thing that would take my sleep away was studying and it wasn’t after completing weird rites like sticking one’s legs in a bowl of cold water or drinking hot coffee infused with lemons.

I had dozed off for a few seconds and when I opened my eyes...he was in front of me, smiling.

Next time, tell whoever invited you that you don’t do night parties, okay?

Wanna dance a little to shake off the sleepiness?

I smiled and got up…it started like we were just playing but I later realized it was becoming a competition. Captain was such a good dancer…although I was shy at first; I had to step up my game.

The dance was so intense that people circled around us; somehow they had chosen sides and my supporters were cheering me on. For the first time that night, I was having fun and after the ‘bout” I was declared the winner (although I felt Captain won).

There will be a rematch” Captain said as he mopped his sweaty face with his handkerchief.

He leaned in and whispered into my ear “You are fun to be with, please do call me sometime

I just smiled and said “Okay sir”.

When the party was over, Chief Agbabiaka’s driver took me back to the campus but Deola stayed behind…she did not return till Monday evening.

I was almost about to call her when she came through the door.

You have to call Captain o” was the first thing she said even before dropping off the things in her hands.

I misplaced the card he gave me…it must have fallen off while we were dancing” I quickly responded

Deola looked at me, shook her head, smiled and said “you this girl…you think you are smart abi?

She reached into one of the bags she brought and handed me a box…it was a brand new phone.

A Nokia 6610, it was so beautiful…I screamed and hugged her.

I didn’t buy it for you o…
Wetin be my own?
Captain wanted me to give you so you reach him easily” She responded as she pushed me away.

His number is already saved on it, so are you going to call him?

I didn’t respond immediately as I was already trying to familiarize myself with the phone and its features.

The screen was colored…it had a new SIM in it, and it was from a different provider than the one I already had. I checked the airtime balance on the phone and screamed again.

Deola then told me that after I left the party, Captain came back to the club house later that Saturday and talked to her some more about me…how he really liked me and how there was something about me that wouldn’t let him back off.
He wanted to know if Deola could make me call him but she told him I didn’t have a good phone and that was going to be my excuse not to call.

Long story short, Captain handed the phone to her to give to me. Someone had given him the phone but he already had the exact type. He also wanted Deola to buy a SIM card for the phone so he could have “my” number…so they drove around and bought the SIM which came with N5,000 worth of airtime preloaded.

So are you going to call him?” Deola asked again

I will…I have to. Even if it’s to thank him for this” I answered

A few minutes later, the phone rang and it was Captain; his name was already saved in my contacts. I wasn’t sure what to do. Deola was looking at me intently and because of my confusion I ended up missing the call.

Call him now…sebi there’s airtime on the phone” She said, with her phone in her right hand like she was messaging someone. I later found out she was communicating with Captain all the while and had told him to call when the phone first rang.

So I called

I could tell he was very happy that I called him. I didn’t say much…I didn’t even know what to say. He said he would like to see me again and asked when I would be available. Deola kept making faces…a kind of communication to tell me to “behave”. Finally I agreed to see him over the weekend; he would send someone to pick me up and all that.

Was it that hard?” Deola said as soon as I hung up

I wanted to see him too but I was a little scared…this man already told me about his family. What did he want with me?

If only he wasn’t married…I thought to myself. I didn’t even care that he was way older than me.

Deola spent the rest of the week coaching me for the weekend. She picked my clothes and took me through some social-etiquette and mannerism training as well.

Saturday came and Captain called me at exactly 5 O’clock…we were supposed to meet at 6. He told me the person he sent to get me was waiting already.

Deola gave me a warm hug as I was about to leave; something suggesting that she was super excited about this. She had the look of a proud mother whose daughter just graduated.
